Brooke Under the Never Sky Book 2 eBook Veronica Rossi

Brooke (Under the Never Sky, #2.5) by Veronica Rossi is another novella in the Under the Never Sky series. Brooke is a member of the Tides, an Outsider society who live a primitive sort of existence, struggling to survive in a dystopian world. Brooke has been in love with Perry, the Blood Lord leader of the Tides, for years. Brooke is forced to admit that Perry has never returned her love, and he now loves another, Aria a member of the Dwellers.

This short story helps to expand upon some of the series’ favorite characters and gives background information that is helpful and interesting to fans of the series. Brooke was never one of my favorite characters. I thought she was a little selfish and nasty. This novella, to me, didn’t do a lot to make me like her more. She struggles to adjust to being without Perry, and she flirts with and kisses several other men over the span of a few pages. I am hoping that she gets her act together and becomes more likeable in the final book in the series. I can see the author setting various scenarios up, and I have a good idea how Brooke’s story may end. I recommend this if you are an avid reader of the series. It’s a quick read.

Brooke Under the Never Sky Book 2 eBook Veronica Rossi Reviews

I love this series, from start to this latest addition. Brooke is a fantastic lead-in to the final volume and I can't wait to get my hands on that one. This novella was nice as a view into Brooke's mind, and to see what is going on in this world after Perry and Aria return. It did feel a little rushed and almost like a survey of the eligible boys in Perry's tribe. As far as plot, there wasn't really one. It felt more like an anecdote in the lives of the Tides than anything else. Still, Ms. Rossi's writing is engaging and well worth the read.
Rossi is great! Her work is very vivid and her characters feel very real to me, like they could be my friend, my cousin, my teacher, and not someone who is living in a distopic world a thousand miles from our reality.

And this story is a little more of that. I couldn't get enough of the fantastic Under the Never Sky world, and this prolonged that good feeling for me. I loved getting to know Brooke a little better and, surprisingly, really empathised with her. Since I love Aria so much, I wasn't expecting to.

It's a good novella for people who read or are reading the trilogy and want a little more.
I liked this novella a lot, despite being hesitant at first to read Brooke's POV. I will take any chance to get back into this world, but didn't expect how much I would understand Brooke by reading the story that bears her name.

Brooke is hurt and angry about losing Perry to Aria - or that's how she sees the problem. But as Brooke reflects on her heartbreak, amidst the return of her sister and the ever present Aether storms plaguing her tribe, I began warming to her. Behind her sometimes abrasive exterior and role as a warrior and protector of her people, is a girl who longs to find a love who puts her first. After spending this time in Brooke's head, I have so much more respect for her. I can completely relate to her struggles and admire her strength.

"What do I want? I have to think about it for a moment. I want to feel wanted and cherished and safe. I want to find someone who won't trade me for another. I want to find love that is visceral and life-sustaining."

Of course I also enjoyed seeing Perry and Aria from an outside perspective. I would gobble them up if I could.

I read Into the Still Blue before Brooke, and while it's not vital to read this novella to understand the conclusion of the series, I did find it to be valuable in enriching this world and characters. It is also a great transition between books two and three.
All Brooke has ever wanted was for Perry to love her the way she loves him and for the people of the Tides to be safe, but neither seems possible. Though Perry was hers for a short while, he is now head over heels for Aria, a useless Dweller. The Aether storms are getting progressively worse and things aren't looking good for the Tides, but she is determined to keep her spirits up for Clara, the sister who she has finally got back. She is also determined to let Perry go because it's apparent to anyone with eyes that he is never coming back to her.

Like everyone else, I think, I was a bit disappointed when I learned the new novella from Veronica Rossi would be about Brooke. Really? I don't care for Brooke at all. Why couldn't you write it about Cinder? Or maybe from Talon's perspective? No? Darn. Unlike most people, however, this doesn't make me fall in love with Brooke's character. I can tolerate her a tad more now, but I still don't like her. She annoyed me more in this. I can sympathize with her situation, being in love with someone who she can never have and I completely understand her desire to move on, but I was not a fan of how she handled it.

I was also a bit annoyed by her overconfidence. On one hand, YA needs many more female leads who know they are attractive and project that confidence so more young girls can accept that and try to be that way, but Brooke came off almost cocky and it annoyed the crap out of me. Every male in the compound looks at you with lust-filled eyes? Awesome, your sexy and you know it. You are the best Seer in the group, as well as a highly talented archer? Even better, keeps you in shape. While I admire her for knowing her assets and being proud of them, I didn't need to hear about it constantly. Yes, we know you think your awesome, but get on with it already!

While I do want to see Brooke get a happy ending for all the crap she has dealt with, I don't particularly want to read anymore from her perspective. You can tell by the end that she'll grow to be more tolerant of Dwellers, and people in general, but she is never going to be a character that I root for. Hopefully you'll like her more than I did!
