not a bad first effort by Matt Hilton; i was hooked by page 28, and enjoyed reading this book at an easy pace over the course of a week or so...

like many serial characters, Joe Hunter may not seem as polished or definitive in the first of a series, so i'm hoping follow-on titles will add a bit more dimension and visual imagery...

on the other hand, the evil protagonist sports enough believability and horror in this short novel to maintain lots of interest...

as with most books of this type, good will out and that is fine for me... there was enough character development to maintain interest, and at that achievement the author has done a good job...

In Dead Men’s Dust, Matt Hilton’s first book introduces Joe Hunter, a man in the military who has training in the martial arts. A man who is a gun for hire, he is asked to track down the whereabouts of his brother, John, by his ex-wife.
John is a deadbeat who ran out on his second wife and kids because he is in debt to a mobster. And if that isn’t enough, John’s problems only get worse when he crosses paths with a serial killer named Cain.
If there is one thing you could say about Hilton, he can develop his characters. Besides John, there is the serial killer Cain, who adds a chill to the story. I like the way Hilton put a twist into the character of Cain. I thought it made him an even more dangerous character as a result.
Part of me felt that the meeting between John and Cain seemed convenient. What followed after that was an interesting game of cat and mouse between the two characters. I thought that as a result, Cain had taken over the story more than Joe Hunter. I wasn’t happy about that since I was interested in Hunter’s character.
There are comparisons drawn between Jack Reacher and Joe Hunter. I thought that since Hilton spent so much time with John and the serial killer, it took away from the story for me and I couldn’t see a comparison between Reacher and Hunter.
I’m not someone who is a fan of reading about serial killers and if anything, I was glad that Hilton allowed me to use my imagination when Cain had murdered people. There were some chilling scenes with John and Cain but I thought it also built the tension and suspense even more.
Yes, there was a lot of action and the ending was very exciting and unpredictable since it’s expected that Hunter and Cain will have their confrontation. Once we learn more about Cain, that confrontation seems even more exciting than ever.
If there was a problem with the book, it was the expectation that Hunter was as entertaining as Jack Reacher. That didn’t come across in this story due to the fact that the point of views switched and much of the novel was more about Cain instead of Hunter and his sidekick, Rink.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and I’m anxious to read other books in this series, hoping to see more of Hunter. More than half the reviews on gave this book 4 stars. I agree and give this book four stars as well.
Dead Men’s Dust by Matt Hilton is in the genre of novels that include the following characteristics. A person with highly developed and extraordinary military skills becomes an assassin for one of the various alphabet agencies of the US government. After a few years of eliminating targets named as enemies of the US, Joe Telfer settles down, but in the UK, not the US. After getting a call that his brother’s wife is being harassed, Joe employs his seemingly innate skills to solve her problem and, by the way, promises that he will help her by finding his brother, her husband, a guy that has abandoned his wife and kids in England to take up with a girlfriend in the US. Now we have the reason for Joe to return to the US and look for his brother, John Telfer.

Joe needs help in the US, of course. He has been away for a long time. Luckily he has maintained contact with his buddies from the past who were in a similar line of work. A lot of dialogue is taken up by the main characters discussing when it is correct to kill. Harvey, Joe, and Rink agree that it is more difficult now to kill than it was in the days when they had permission to do so. Think of various types of affiliation with the CIA.

John Telfer has disappeared from life with his new girlfriend. There are hints that he is involved in the minor criminal activity, he got in over his head, and he is running away from his old life financed by money he stole from former criminal colleagues. Brother Joe, main protagonist and brother to John, doesn’t care what John has done or why he did it. He just wants to help his sister-in-law, John’s wife, who remains in England.
And it is true, John is on the run. Unfortunately in his travels on the road, John meets Tubal Cain, a psychotic possessing great skills with a knife. At his most harmless, he likes to get close to people and cut swatches of cloth from their clothes without them becoming aware. That is play; it’s a game. On the other extreme, he likes to kill people after torturing them for a while. Then he takes body parts as souvenirs. He strips the souvenirs to the bone and periodically returns to his home lair in a desert where he is constructing some form of tribute, maybe to himself.

John and Tubal meet. Tubal thinks John has some value in the short run to serve as a confederate in stealing from the rich and giving to Tubal. There is no doubt that Tubal will eventually kill John unless Joe rescues him first. Although Tubal is a psychotic and a trained killer, Joe and his friends are well-balanced mentally healthy killers. So, the race is on.

The novel is fast paced and entertaining with only one flaw. I will illustrate the flaw with the following quote “I am a believer in a sixth sense, the heightened ability to detect the unseen watcher, the sniper on the rooftop or the tiger hidden in the long grass. It’s so widely believed that it has even been given a term Rapid Intuitive Experience, the soldier’s very own ESP.” (pg 279). The flaw is the unexplained, sudden “ah-ha” moment. The hero knows danger is imminent, but the knowledge seems to come from within; there are no external clues that the hero is about to be shot, stabbed, strangled, or otherwise maimed. It’s probably a great skill to have. It is also a handy device for an author who may have painted the plot into a corner. The hero can escape due to an almost divine mental revelation.

This novel is good entertainment if the reader can get past the frequent appearance of fortuitous circumstances that rescue the good guys from the bad guys.
An incredibly engrossing five star thriller! Matt Hilton's first installment in the Joe Hunter series is unequivocally the scariest high-octane novel I have ever read! This series has not gotten the press or praise it so deserves, and the reason for that eludes this reader the storyline is original and spellbinding, the characters are authentic and bewitching ,and the non-stop action is utterly edge-of-your-seat riveting! Mr. Hilton's well-honed author's craft is outstanding, especially in his use of Joe Hunter's voice, imagery, and characterization. If you like Mitch Rapp, Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, or John Puller, you will absolutely LOVE Joe Hunter! I have recently been introduced to this author and series, and am glad I have ten more Joe Hunter novels to devour before I have to "wait" for the twelfth installment! If my heart can stand it!
