Isla and the Happily Ever After Stephanie Perkins Books

My short review:

I LOVED IT! This book was one that invoked so many emotions. It's a beautifully told love story with two realistically, flawed characters that I enjoyed getting to know, and totally fell in love with. Isla and the Happily Ever After surpassed every expectation I had for the book. This book is Stephanie Perkins perfection!

My Full Review:

First there was Anna & Etienne, then there was Lola & Cricket, and now there's Isla and Josh. Like the first two couples, I loved everything about Isla & Josh's story. Perkins does such a beautiful job at capturing the moments, and feelings that come with falling in love. The excitement, the shyness, the awkwardness, the unsurety, the newness of it all, and everything else that comes with it. She wraps up all the emotions, and those first moments so elegantly. It reminded me of those first moments of my own personal experiences.

Like with each of her books, this is my new favorite Stephanie Perkins book.

Reading the Isla and the Happily Ever After sneak peak gave me a just enough pages to be mesmerized by the romantic, writing magic that only Stephanie Perkins possess, but not enough pages to satisfy my addiction to her characters, and her beautiful story telling. Reading the full story surpassed every expectation I had for the book. Isla and the Happily Ever After is Stephanie Perkins perfection! I loved every moment of it. From the excitement of Josh and Isla falling in love, to the things that unfolded through out their story, to that perfect Josh & Isla ending. I couldn't get enough of their story or Perkins's writing.

In true Stephanie Perkins fashion, by the time I got to the end of page one I was already hooked. Right off the bat I drawn to Isla and Josh, and wanted to read more of their story. Stephanie has a way of creating such realistic characters that makes me love them, laugh with them, and ache for them and with them. I loved the way Stephanie made me feel Isla's awkwardness, and that daring side her shows within the first few pages of the book around Josh. That cafe scene is brilliant! I couldn't help myself from laughing a few times within these brief pages at the situations that arise between Isla and Josh. I think there's something there that many readers will relate to. I enjoyed getting to know Isla and watching her transform into a stronger, more secure/confident women as the story progresses, and her relationship with Josh develops. I loved it.

Josh is just as exciting to get to know as Isla. From the get go there was something about him that made me get why Isla feels the way she does about him. Like Etienne and Cricket, there's much more to Josh than even Isla knows, and I loved the way Perkins's allowed me to get to know him as well. One of my favorite things about him, was seeing that unsurety he has about how much Isla really liked him, in the beginning of their relationship. This made him more of a real character. While it's great reading about strong guys (don't get me wrong, Josh is in his own way), it's nice to read a story that shows readers the vulnerable side guys also have. In Josh's case, it made him easier to get to know, and adore. Trust me, he's also a strong character like Isla, and like her, once he knows what he wants, he goes for it and doesn't hold back.

Josh and Isla's story reminded me of the feelings that come with falling in love, and all the feelings that come with being in love. Josh and Isla have a lot they offer each other, which like any love story, also makes them vulnerable in a very realistic way. Through that, Perkins allowed me to emotionally get attached to her characters and their story. I love the way Perkins's described all the feelings that come with being in a relationship, on paper, and the way she captured their unforgettable moments together. Perkins's gives her readers an epic love story from beginning to end. No little moment or big moment is left out.

I loved reading Isla and Josh's story. They have a lot that they offer to each other. There are many scenes in this book that I absolutely loved. There were moments that made me sigh, had me smiling, made me laugh out loud, and as you guessed it, got me a little teary eyed. You know I won't say much else about those scenes, due to spoilers. You know what I will tell you? That aside from Isla and Josh there is a wonderful character whom I think fans of Perkins's books will also love, Kurt, whom plays an important role in Isla's life and in the story.

If you have ever wondered why characters with autism have an absence in YA books, you'll wish more authors could write an autistic character like Kurt, the way Stephanie Perkins can. Kurt's character is so realistically portrayed and beautifully done. I love that connection and understand Isla and Kurt had, and the way Josh treated and respected him. Kurt is one of those supporting characters who has his own spotlight in the story, and I loved getting to know him. Speaking of characters, I love that my favorite Perkins characters also make appearances in this book.

Like Stephanie's previous two books, I think Isla and the Happily Ever After will be a love story equal to those of the classic kind. You know the ones I'm talking about. The kind that you can't read one time through, nor can you stop thinking about it when you finish it. I can't tell you guys how excited I am about this book being released soon. Stephanie's books were the first YA contemporary books I read, and completely fell head over heels in love with. She has this ability to create epic love stories that are slow burning, perfectly paced, real stories that emotionally pull me into her story, and fall in love with the way the characters fall in love. With out fail, she always leaves me wanting more, even though I'm more than completely happy and satisfied with how each story ends.

This books gets 5+ stars from me!!

Isla and the Happily Ever After Stephanie Perkins Books Reviews

Sigh. I just adore Stephanie Perkins' young adult novels. This one has taken a long time to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. After taking an American detour in the second book of the series, we get to return to France for the finale of the series. This story is told through the first person narration of Isla. And yes, I know that her name is pronounced "eye-la" not "Iz-la," but I could never make my brain think the correct pronunciation. I struggled with that through the book. Either way ... Isla has been in love with Josh from afar since her freshman year. But Josh seemed to be way out of her league, at least in her mind. So through three years of high school Josh had his group of friends and a super steady girlfriend while Isla mostly hung out with her best friend forever, Kurt, a young man with high functioning autism who is squarely in the friend zone with her. She has her own boyfriend for awhile, and when he left the picture people still believed that Isla and Kurt were an item. So although Isla sported a major crush on Josh, the two lived in two separate spheres within their school.

All that changes right before Josh and Isla enter their senior year and they have a chance encounter in a New York cafe late at night. Suddenly these two have a connection to draw them together when they return to school, giving Isla a reason to push herself out of her shy awkwardness around Josh.

The romance of this story seems to steam ahead very quickly. Very quickly. Josh and Isla are already a couple before the book is even a third of the way through. They seem wonderful together. What could possibly go wrong with that much time left in the book? What often happens in YA books such as this is that the author creates a thousand melodramatic moments to drive the couple together then apart then together over and over again. However, Stephanie Perkins manages to just create simple, often sweet. moments in the life of Josh and Isla that show the growth of the relationship as well as the insecurities that will create strain within that relationship. Ultimately this is the story of a girl who doesn't really believe in herself. Isla is beautiful and talented and engaging. There are so many reasons for others to love her, but deep down she doesn't truly believe that about herself. That makes a relationship with Josh seem almost unrealistic to her. How could this talented, gorgeous, superstar son of a US senator really truly love her? In her mind it makes no sense, and as long as Isla harbors these feelings of inadequacy she will never truly be comfortable in a relationship with Josh.

What I really, really loved

The relationship between Isla and Josh. I didn't love it because it was perfect. It was not. Not at all. These two rushed right into the relationship with both feet. They were all in, full of overwhelming passion and desire for each other. They couldn't concentrate on much besides each other. They were deeply, madly in love ... almost from the beginning. But as much as the relationship soared from the start, it was just as quick to find itself crashing, and when it crashed it crashed hard. So no ... this relationship was not perfect. But it really encapsulated what a high school romance is like in so many ways. As we first experience those amazing feelings of love for another it can be like a blazing fire, all consuming and maybe a little suffocating (but in a good way, if that makes sense). But as quick as those feelings burn, they can be doused almost as fast, and when they do it can be devastating. That is what Isla and Josh discover. They experience the highs of first love, but along with it comes jealousy and misunderstanding and hurt. If this relationship is to endure Isla has got to realize her own self worth, independent of anyone else. Josh is going to have to find a way to handle his conflicts in positive ways, taking responsibility for his actions and owning up to his true feelings about the direction of his life. Both Josh and Isla have to grow up, and Stephanie Perkins does an amazing job at walking readers through the ups and downs of this relationship. She keeps us engaged and involved with the characters without causing us to be horribly annoyed with some of their bad decisions. This was a sweet relationship to read. Even when it was obvious that they were way over the top at the beginning of their dating, I still rooted for them to work their way through things because it was obvious that the two of them were good together.

This was a wonderful finale to this series. I still think that Anna and the French Kiss is the best of the three books, but all three got five stars from me. We get to see all our favorite characters from the first two books in this one for a little bit. I haven't read the first two books in awhile, but this story made me want to go back and revisit the previous books because I love the characters Stephanie creates so much. They are definitely must read books for fans of YA romance literature. Five stars!
Years ago, I was hooked on this author Stephanie Perkins after falling in love with her two books in the Anna and the French Kiss series. I found them easy to read and the characters were lovable. For years, I had wanted to read Book #3 Isla and the Happily Ever After, however, with more books being released every day and new titles appearing, this book went to the bottom of the list until recently when I saw that our library had just purchased a copy. I was so happy. Though I felt let down a bit with this book and me do wonder if that was due to my age as I was in my early-mid 20's when I read the books and now I am nearing 30, and I find that some YA books just don't grab me as much as they used to in the past. It could be as simple as the fact that the storylines are so similar that they are drilled into me, and my excitement level doesn't get peaked as high as it used to. Isla and the Happily Ever After was one of those stories sadly. Isla is nearing the last year of her time at the SOAP and has had a major crush on Josh. Is this her year to finally make her crush dreams a reality? Of course, what's a bit of romance if it isn't forbidden or has a lot of obstacles in the way. Isla and the Happily Ever After definitely is one of those Teen Angst/Romance reads that are popular as everyone needs a bit of angst in our lives. One of the things that I loved about this book was the reunion of the past books #1 and #2 characters like Etienne St Clair, Anna, Cricket, Lola, and Calliope. This made me smile as it was great to see what they have gotten up to past their story endings. Isla and the Happily Ever After are the perfect romance/angst read for the YA Audience. Especially those around 14-16 years of age.
