I read this years and years ago - I think I actually bought it through Scholastic Book Club - and it was terrific - scary and involving. I loaned it to a friend - mistake! - and never got it back. My daughter-in-law was looking for a good read, and so I got it for her. I read it again myself - it was as good now as I remember it being then! For anyone who likes a good ghost mystery, and for those who like Sherlock Holmes, you will enjoy this - even though it was written in the 1940s!!

I was really looking forward to reading this book. It was a disappointing read, too slow, although the story was okay. I don't think I'll be looking for any other books by this author too soon.
Elizabeth Daly is an excellent writer, and this is one of her best books. I am grateful to Felony and Mayhem for publishing it -- and for publishing other books by this author of the Golden Age!
By the way, Elizabeth Daly is said to have been Agatha Christie's favorite writer of detective novels.
I enjoy Elizabeth Daly's Gamadge series and this is one I particularly enjoyed. I've read all the titles now in print and will be sad to read the last one.

This may not be the best Daly novel to start with; I didn't much like Gamadge's relationship with his wife, but the situation is so extreme that it might explain some paternalism. The writing and plot are excellent.
Plot During the early days of WWII Clara Gamadge moves into a rented summer cottage in the Berkshires with her housekeeper Maggie. Her husband Henry plans to join her after his overseas mission is complete; another couple will also share their quiet refuge. Soon after arriving Clara and Maggie see a mysterious figure on a nearby path night after night. Is the figure that of the woman who recently died in the rented cottage? And is the dead woman's sister to become a victim at the hand of a ghost?

Review A "cosy" mystery set in the countryside peopled with sophisticated city folk amidst the "natives," with a houseful of war refugees thrown in for good measure. A pretty good mystery, written in a pleasing style. This was my first Henry Gamage mystery, and I plan to seek out more based on this.
